Common Plumbing Faults

1. Dripping tap

Hearing constant drops from your tap can be irritating, as well as potentially causing an increase in your water usage and therefore the cost of your water bill.

Cause:

Usually, a dripping tap is caused by worn-out parts, it is the sign your rubber seals have worn or limescale has built up. In modern taps, the built-in cartridge could be worn which will cause your tap to drip.

Solution:

It is important to note that conducting any sort of DIY task comes with the risk of further damage. For high quality, fast and reliable repairs it is important to get the help of a trained professional when it comes to tap repairs.

Before doing anything make sure to turn off your water supply.

When inspecting the tap:

    • Unscrew the tap cap
    • Remove the head of the tap
    • Unscrew the main body of the tap
    • Check to see if the seating is cracked
    • Clean the washer of any limescale or debris

After you have removed all the debris and limescale check to see whether the washer is damaged or worn. Replace the washer if damaged.

Replace all tap parts and switch the water supply back on.

2. Radiator cold patches

It can be frustrating when you have cold spots on your radiator, especially when you are trying to keep your home warm in winter.

Causes:

Trapped air pockets can cause your radiator to have cold patches and are commonly caused by small leaks. These small leaks won’t cause any daily issues however, they can create trapped air patches in your radiator over time.

Solution:

Bleeding your radiators is fairly simple, all you’ll need is an old cloth and a radiator valve key.

    • Turn off radiators and make sure heating is off
    • Hold your cloth under the bleed valve and insert the bleed key
    • Turn anti-clockwise until you hear a hissing noise
    • When water starts to leak turn the key clockwise to secure the valve
