5 Simple Tips for Fridge Maintenance

Looking for the best way to keep your food fresh for longer? follow out 5 step guide to find out the best way to keep your food fresh and your drinks cool.

Unsurprisingly, your fridge is the most important appliance in your home. Your fridge will keep your food fresh and your drinks cool. Ensuring your fridge is in peak condition might seem like a laborious task, but we’ve cut it down into five easy steps:

5 ways to keep your fridge fresh

1. Keep it clean

The first step is to clean! Grab a sponge and use some soapy water to clean up any crumbs and spills that are on the shelves and walls. If necessary, also wipe down the door and handles. Once clean, place an uncovered box of baking soda in the fridge to absorb odours. Replace every three months or so depending on the amount of uncovered food kept in your fridge. Set yourself a reminder to go through the contents of your fridge to discard stale food and keep an eye on expiry dates.

2. Keep the doors closed

We hope this one is obvious, but you must make sure the fridge door stays closed when you’re not using it. Don’t leave it open whilst you are cooking or doing other household chores, allowing the warm air to sneak in. If your house loses power, ensure that the fridge remains closed until the power comes back on to keep your food cool for up to four hours.

3. Check the temperature

Keep an eye on the temperature to ensure it stays between 2°C and 5°C to keep food fresh. A common mistake is putting hot food straight into the fridge before letting it cool – this can bring up the temperature of other food in the fridge and cause the fridge to work overtime to regulate the overall temperature. Let food cool for up to an hour before placing it in the fridge to avoid contamination.

4. Check door seals

Door seals will loosen and split over time which could cause the cool temperatures to leak out. A quick tip to check that the seal is working correctly is to close the door on an A4 piece of paper, ensuring that half’s in, half’s out. If you’re able to easily pull the piece of paper out, the seals may have broken and might need replacing.

5. Clean the condenser coils

Although looking after the inside of a fridge is important, don’t forget the outside. In particular, the condenser coils keep the fridge cool and need to be free of debris. They can be located underneath or at the back of your fridge. You must ensure that the fridge is turned off to avoid electrocution before cleaning. You can remove any debris, dust or dirt using a vacuum cleaner or soft brush ensuring you’re careful not to damage the coils in the process. Do this every six months or so to help keep the fridge running smoothly.
