6 common fridge freezer faults you can avoid this springtime.

Want to make the most of Spring this year? Our experts have put together 6 common fridge freezer faults to avoid. Read on to find out more.

Spring/summer of 2022 has been long-awaited for all of us. This spring and summer will be the first time since the pandemic began that we will all be able to freely have friends and family around to enjoy a BBQ or dinner/garden party without restrictions or worry.

However, hot weather can not only have an effect on our social life, but it can also have an adverse effect on our fridge freezers – especially during the summer months. The increased air temperature means your fridge freezer is made to work a lot harder to keep your food cool and fresh.

This can inevitably result in faults occurring with our fridge freezers, however, do not panic – we have put together a list of the 6 most common faults for you to look out for and how to fix them to keep that fridge cool for spring/summer of 2022.

6 common fridge freezer faults

1. My fridge is not cold enough

We understand that there is nothing worse than opening your fully stocked fridge only to feel a warm waft of air. However, there are many benign causes of a moderately cold fridge that can easily be fixed. The first culprit could be your door seals. A loose door seal allows cool air within the fridge freezer to trickle out, not only does this waste energy but over time this can affect the overall temperature of the fridge freezer as it has to work harder than it needs to.

Check that your door seals properly insulate the door shut, if the seal is loose, we would advise resealing it. Ensure that your door seal is regularly cleaned and free from debris – this can have a big impact on whether the door is sealing shut. A good scrub around the seal with anti-bacterial spray every now and then should stop anything preventing the seal from being shut.

Open your fridge up and have a look at the temperature gauge within your appliance – is it set to the manufactures recommended temperature? Having a busy, overflowing fridge can sometimes cause this to be knocked and the internal temperature, therefore, is not set to standard – resulting in a warmer fridge than anticipated.

Often keep the door open when preparing food or cooking? Having the door open often cause a bigger change in the internal temperature than you would expect. Keep it shut, especially in the coming hotter months.

2. Food in my freezer has defrosted

Gone to the freezer to begin the defrosting process in preparation for tomorrow’s dinner, only to find your appliance has done the defrosting for you?

First things first – we know it sounds silly, but is the appliance on? Sometimes switches get accidentally pressed or knocked and this can be the main culprit of a dyer defrost.

If the power is on, check the door seals for debris or damage – as stated above this can have a knock-on effect on the temperature.

3. A strange smell is coming from my fridge freezer

If you have a strange smell coming from your appliance when you open the doors it can be difficult to know where the smell may be coming from. However, we know that is going to most likely be caused by bacteria.

This could be the result of spoiled food that may be lurking in the back of your fridge – condensation, humidity or perhaps a dirty door seal.

Our recommendation would be to give your appliance a good scrub – this should help eliminate any nasty smell you’re experiencing.

4. Ice is building up within the fridge freezer

Ice build-up usually occurs due to a change in humidity levels – this is commonly caused by the fridge door being left open during cooking or when reaching in for a snack. Make sure you keep that door shut when in the kitchen to prevent this from happening.

It is also worthwhile checking if your doors are shutting properly by inspecting the door seal, ensuring all seals are clean and not damaged.

5. The outside of my fridge freezer is hot

Not to worry this is normal and is caused by heat dissipation from the refrigeration process. If there are no visible signs of scorching – and the temperature inside the fridge freezer is normal, there is no need to panic.

6. My appliance doesn't have any power

If your fridge freezer seems to have no power our first bit of advice would be to check the plug that the appliance is connected to. Check for scorch marks, dust, and dirt. Dust and dirt can stop the plug from working efficiently – whilst scorch marks indicate that there may be a bigger issue with the socket/ electrical system.

Plug another appliance into the socket, if this appliance doesn’t then work it is indicating you may have an issue with your socket. If the other appliance does work and your fridge freezer remains powerless, we would advise giving one of our engineers a call.
