How To Organise Your Fridge

Looking for the fridge of your dreams? Our organising experts are here to offer advice on how to get your fridge in perfect working order!

Do you sigh every time you open the fridge door? Sick of having to remove half the contents just to get a jar of marmalade out?

Or maybe you have ended up with last night’s leftovers catapulting all over the kitchen floor one too many times? Enough is enough. It’s time to take back control.

Fridges (and freezers) are prone to chaos without a little thought about order and organisation. But never fear, because whipping the clutter into shape is easier than you might have thought - and you might even enjoy it!

Organising your fridge

Here are some simple tips on how to organise your fridge:

1. Get yourself some fridge organisers

Do you know the clear plastic containers that usually form the bottom one or two levels of your fridge? Well, have you ever thought about why your entire fridge isn’t made up of handy storage units like these, instead of shelves so deep that it quickly becomes close to impossible to navigate your way around them?

No need to wonder - you can make it happen yourself. Fridge organisers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, from plastic pots to stylish-looking baskets, to suit the various different heights of your fridge shelves. Armed with a good selection of these, you can start to give everything in your fridge its own home.

There are even plenty of special-purpose organisers available, such as can or bottle racks, or even bacon savers, which are ideal for making sure sliced meats stay fresh and don’t drip everywhere - something none of us wants to have to clean up.

2. Label your organisers

Once you have your containers and baskets and you have sorted out which one the cheese will live in, which one is for a fresh salad, which for condiments, breakfast spreads and so on - label everything.

Organisers are great because you can pull out a conveniently-sized unit to look for what you want instead of rooting around the entire fridge. But if you have to pull out three baskets before you find the one you need, it kind of defeats the object. Labels mean you get right to where you need to go the first time. And while you are at it, you might as well label the door trays, too.

3. Try a Lazy Susan

Backs of fridges are where all sorts of hidden horrors lurk. How many times have you dug around back there only to recoil in disgust when you pull out a long-forgotten (and very mouldy) jar of something several years out of date?

The reason why we forget about things at the back of our fridge is because of access. Once more recent purchases or more frequently used items are stacked in front of them, whatever is at the back is quite literally out of sight, out of mind - and we don’t go foraging around to see what there is back there because, quite frankly, it’s a hassle.

The answer to this dilemma could be a Lazy Susan - one of those rotating circular shelves you might remember your grandmother having. They might have fallen out of fashion, but from a practical point of view, they are great. In your fridge, a simple spin and you will always be able to see exactly what you have in there.
