A washer-dryer is an important appliance in your household because it allows you to perform two functions in one machine; you can wash your clothes and dry them when done. It will not only cause you unnecessary delays in your daily house chores but can also pose more serious problems.

Before you go about and decide to buy a new washer dryer, you can troubleshoot a few common problems on your own. Some of these problems may be solved through simple fixes.

The door is not opening

If your washer dryer has completed a wash cycle and when you try to open the door and it doesn’t, then this is often caused by the machine’s incapability to drain the water. Some washer dryers have a built-in safety mechanism that prevents the user from opening the door if there is water left in the drum or in the pipes.

You can run the washer dryer on a spin cycle to forcefully drain the water out, but if this undertaking is unsuccessful, you will need to manually drain the water out. Obtain a bucket or a trough; remove the drain pipe located under or at the rear of the machine and place it in the trough or bucket. Drain the pipe till there is no more water.

The appliance fails to start

There can be multiple reasons for a washer-dryer to not start, but the most likely problem is that the door is not shut properly. Open the door and close it again. If this does not work, then probably the pressure pad or the sensor located on the door has accumulated dirt. This sensor signals the washer-dryer to start when the door is properly closed. Take a clean dry cloth and wipe the latch and the door, and then try again.

If this is unsuccessful, then you need to inspect the seals around the door. A weak seal can cause the door to not shut properly, resulting in the machine’s inability to start. These seals might need to be replaced.

The automatic switchover is not working

Another common problem is encountered when the washer-dryer has been set to automatically switch on the dryer after the wash cycle is complete. This often causes the dryer to not start. This is due to water being accumulated in the drum. You can run the washer dryer on a spin cycle to force it to drain the water or as instructed earlier, use a bucket or trough to drain the pipe.

Vibrations

If you observe that your washer dryer vibrates a lot, this might be due to the fact that it has been placed on an uneven surface. Check the flooring beneath the machine for signs of degradation; in the worst-case scenario, the flooring will need replacement. The floor needs to be level. If the floor is level, examine the feet of the appliance and ensure that they are fitted and aligned properly.
