Your right to repair

Don't replace your appliance - repair!

It’s no secret that home appliances play a vital role in our everyday lives, from washing to eating, enabling once time-consuming tasks to become a breeze in the hustle and bustle of the household.

The average household appliance holds a lifespan of a decade - that's 10 years of family roasts in ovens, fresh dry clothes in tumble dryers, packed lunches in fridges and clean plates in dishwashers. So, why is it when faults occur with our appliances, only 2% of us choose to get them repaired?

Perhaps consumers are considering cutting their losses under the belief a repair will cost a similar price to a replacement? Years ago, that may have been the case. However, in the year 2022, If you are looking to replace an appliane, research from price comparison websites has found that the prices of white goods and gadgets have soared by 30% in the last two years.

The average price of a washing machine was up by 46% or £152 between January 2020 and February 2022, and a tumble dryer £70. It has been calculated those consumers willing to replace will end up paying 30% more this year– with wholesale shipping and costs rising. A standard American fridge freezer has increased from £12 to £80 for standard shipping. Whilst it is cheaper to repair, we appreciate that in previous years, the option of repairing was deemed a more difficult task, as it has been hard to obtain spare parts from manufacturers, in hopes consumers would purchase new appliances at high costs.

Your right to repair

However, the ‘Right to Repair’ legislation now requires manufacturers to make spare parts available for up to 10 years. These new rules should bring an end to the frustration of having to throw away an item because a small part is no longer working and is no longer in stock. This means a repair will always be a viable option within your appliances’ lifespan! It’s time to utilize this right.
