How to clean your washing machine drum

Keep your washing machine running efficiently with regular cleaning

A clean washing machine drum is essential for keeping your laundry fresh and free from unpleasant odours. Over time, detergent residue, fabric softener buildup, and trapped dirt can lead to mould, mildew, and an inefficient washing machine. At Go Assist, we know how important it is to keep your appliances in top condition. That’s why we’re sharing this simple guide to help you clean your washing machine drum effectively.

Why cleaning your washing machine drum matters

A dirty drum can lead to:

  • Unpleasant odours in your laundry
  • Residue buildup on clothes
  • Poor washing performance
  • Potential blockages and damages to your machine

Regular cleaning helps extend the lifespan of your washing machine and ensures every wash is as effective as possible.

Step-by-step guide

1. Run a hot water cycle with vinegar

White vinegar is a natural disinfectant and deodoriser that helps remove bacteria and buildup.

  • Set your washing machine to the hottest setting and longest cycle.

  • Add two cups of white vinegar to the detergent dispenser. Alternatively, you could use a commercial washing machine cleaner.

  • Start the cycle and let the vinegar or cleaner work its magic.

2. Scrub the drum with baking soda

Baking soda helps break down stubborn residues and neutralises odours.

  • Mix half a cup of baking soda with water to create a paste.

  • Use a soft cloth or sponge to gently scrub the drum, paying attention to any visible buildup.

  • Wipe down the rubber seal and drum edges to remove trapped dirt and mould.

3. Run a second hot water cycle

  • Set another hot water cycle, this time adding half a cup of baking soda directly into the drum.

  • This step helps remove any lingering vinegar and loosened grime.

4. Clean the detergent drawer and filter

  • Remove the detergent drawer and soak it in warm, soapy water.

  • Scrub away any residue before placing it back.

  • Check and clean the filter (usually located at the bottom of the machine) to remove trapped debris and lint.

5. Wipe down the exterior and leave the door open

  • Use a damp cloth to clean the control panel and exterior surfaces.

  • Always leave the washing machine door ajar after a wash to allow air circulation and prevent mould growth.

How often should you clean your washing machine?

To keep your washing machine in peak condition:

  • Perform a deep clean every 1-3 months, depending on how often you use it.

  • Wipe down the drum and seal weekly.

  • Leave the door open after each wash to prevent moisture buildup.
