4. Appliance repairs

If your appliances are running efficiently, they can help you save money in the long term. If your appliances are working inefficiently, you will waste excess energy increasing your energy costs over time. To help keep costs low get your appliances repaired and save time and money.

5. Turn off the TV at the wall

When your TV is left on standby it is still receiving power from the electricity socket to keep it running at a low level. Therefore, when you leave your appliances on standby, they are still wasting energy. According to the Energy Saving Trust, you could save around £35 a year by turning off your appliances. Turn those appliances off at the wall and save yourself money this year.

6. Only boil water you need

Make sure you only fill your kettle with as much water as you need. If you are only making 1 cup of tea do not boil more water than you need. Additionally, descaling your kettle regularly will improve its efficiency.

7. Switch lights off

Switching off your lights when you are not using them could save you up to £15 a year on your energy bill according to the Energy Saving Trust. Make sure you get into the habit of turning the lights off when you leave the room.

8. Bleed your radiators

Bleeding your radiators will remove air from the system which will improve efficiency which will in turn be a lot more cost-effective. Make sure you get into a regular habit of bleeding your radiators twice a year.

9. Do laundry in loads

Half-load settings don’t save much energy, a full load is much more energy-efficient. For a more energy-efficient wash make sure you load your washing machine and avoid doing smaller washes.

10. Use a dishwasher instead of washing up

According to Which dishwashers use around 10 times less water to wash the same amount of dishes compared to washing by hand. If you can avoid washing up by hand make sure to use your dishwasher, not only will it save you energy, but it will also save you from the dreaded washing up.
