Your End of Tenancy Checklist To A Spotless Home
Nearing the end of your tenancy? Worried about getting your deposit back? Our appliance engineers offer repairs at low prices and are here to offer advice along the way.
Leaving your rented home in the condition you found it is always a concern for tenants. Landlords take a dim view of properties being left in a grimy state. If they have to call in professional cleaners to carry out a deep clean, you can bet the cost will be coming out of your deposit.
Given the size of the average tenancy deposit in London, that’s not a financial hit anyone can take lightly.
So what can you do to ensure you leave your rented home spick and span to make sure all of that deposit comes back to you? Here are some great deep-cleaning hacks that are sure to impress.
How to clean your appliances
The Power Trio - Baking Soda, Vinegar & Lemon
No, we’re not suggesting you bake some weird kind of cake to enjoy once you’ve finished all the cleaning - these three humble ingredients really can take your cleaning to the next level! Stock up on a couple of pots of bicarb, a big bottle of white spirit vinegar and a handful of lemons and try the following:
1. Oven & Hob Clean:
For your oven and hob top (which let’s face it, are probably two of the biggest cleaning concerns you have), make up a paste using baking soda, water and, as an optional extra, a few drops of washing up liquid. Smear this liberally over all surfaces, leave 10 minutes and then spray vinegar over everything. Watch it fizz - that’s loosening all that grease and burnt-on grime, making it easy for you to just wipe down!
2. Grills
For grill trays and racks which often suffer from some of the most stubborn build-ups of incinerated ex-food, try a paste of lemon juice and salt (which makes a great abrasive) and scrub off the black mess with a toothbrush.
3. Sink
For your sinks, unclog a smelly drain by tipping a tablespoon of bicarb down it, followed by a tablespoon of salt and a generous helping of vinegar. When the volcano-like eruption of bubbles has stopped, tip down a kettle of boiling water and fingers crossed, you will have shifted any blockages. Use cut lemon halves to rub off any stains in the sink itself and to make your taps sparkle again.
4. Microwave
Try sitting two or three lemon wedges in a bowl of water and blast it in your microwave for a couple of minutes. The lemony mist that covers the interior of your microwave will make it much easier to wipe down and clean!
5. Bathroom
Mildew and mould in your bathroom can be one of the biggest concerns for tenants wanting to leave their properties spotless, especially when it stains the grout between your tiles. Lemon juice and an old toothbrush can be as effective as any shop-bought chemical product.
Finally, don’t forget to focus on the areas that you can’t immediately see around your property - you can guarantee your landlord will be checking them! That means pulling out sofas, dressers, beds, cupboards and kitchen appliances and dealing with whatever horrors you find lurking behind them.
And don’t forget to wipe down your skirting boards!
